Die aktuellen Theorien werden knapp beschrieben und sollen nur das Grundgerüst bilden, um Eliten zu verstehen. Die Untersuchung des Elitenbegriffs über den historischen Zeitraum gibt Aufschluss über die gesellschaftliche Akzeptanz eines Begriffes. Die Brisanz der Erforschung der Elitenthematik erstreckte sich in den 60er Jahren, führend hier der Elitenkritiker Dahrendorf.
Aber auch in den 90er Jahren bis Dato sind immer wieder neue Werke herausgekommen, die sich den Eliten widmen. Hervorzuheben sind hierbei die Mannheimer und Potsdamer Elitenstudie der 90er Jahre.
Ich stütze mich bei der Untersuchung der Historie vor allem auf Beate Krais und Rainer Geißler, die aktuellste Befunde der Elitenforschung auf den Punkt bringen.
Zudem wird im Rahmen der Frage heutiger Elitenkriterien der Gleichheitsgrundsatz diskutiert, es geht um Herkunftselite as opposed to Leistungseliten. Wird der prestige qua Geburt festgelegt oder hat jeder die likelihood „Elite“ zu werden? Dieser Frage stellte sich Soziologe Michael Hartmann, dessen Studie über Topmanager wohl die aufschlussreichste auf dem Markt ist. Daneben steht Pierre Bourdieu, welcher sich mit dem klassenspezifischen Habitus am Beispiel der Gesellschaft in Frankreich beschäftigte. Um anzuführen, wie sich Eliten in Zukunft in einer globalisierten Wissensgesellschaft entwickeln könnten werde ich beispielsweise aus Bittlingmayer zitieren und eigene Anregungen in die Diskussion einbringen. Es ist mir selbstverständlich nicht möglich trotz Betrachtung der Historie des Elitenbegriffs eine weitreichende Prognose zu stellen. Dennoch: Die Elitenthematik hat große Brisanz und es ist wichtig, sich mit ihr auseinander zu setzen.
